WHAT IS ARTISANAL AND SMALL SCALE MINING?

Mining involves extracting and processing economically valuable minerals. Many minerals are mined in Uganda, including gold, tin, gemstones, limestone, clay, salt and stone aggregate. There is no commonly accepted definition of artisanal and small scale mining (ASM), because it can have very different characteristics at every site!
ASM can be:

- Very manual and labour-intensive, using only shovels and basins or somewhat mechanized, using heavy machinery.

- Small in scale, employing only a few people working at a small mine or large in scale, involving up to thousands of women, men and children across a relatively small area.

- Usually disorganized or informally organized and unlicensed or organized in the form of a company or association that is legally allowed (licensed) to operate.
